Singer on the Metro

My old comrade Adam Shapiro just posted this short video, taken on the Paris Metro, on YouTube. It’s profoundly moving, but why, in what sense? Because of the woman’s lovely singing voice – and the plea for coins to buy bread with in the words of her song? The pain which howls out in every step she takes, on bare feet? The indifference of many of the passengers as she walks by? Beautiful, and deeply disturbing:
